Easter program outline

We will witness of you: We see Christ in the eyes of our neighbors. We hear Christ in the sounds of pain and joy. We see Christ in action in the world. Lord, you are risen indeed. We are your witnesses.

You are at work in the world today. You still call disciples to assist in the work. We will be your disciples. We are the disciples of Jesus Christ. Invite the congregation to bring their Mission Tithes and flowers forward to the cross.

Be prepared to assist those who cannot come forward. The flowers will be taken to the sick, hospitalized, and disabled after the service. The words of the first part of this hymn are expressed in the following reading.

Leader: Jesus Christ is risen today, Our triumphant holy day. Leader: Hymns of praise then let us sing, Unto Christ our heavenly King. Leader: Who did once, upon the cross, Suffer to redeem our loss. A keyboard plays the final Alleluia phrase to introduce the congregation singing the third verse. All Sing: Sing we to our God above, Alleluia! Praise eternal as his love; Alleluia!

Praise Him, all ye heavenly host, Alleluia! God and Son and Holy Ghost. Choir or keyboard music can continue to be shared in the spirit of joy. Examine your hands. How may they heal others? What are the needs of others in your life? Like Jesus, see their wounds, yet see their strength.

Who are you sent to hold, to share the good news with? Consecrate them to witnessing and aiding others. Make the sound four times. Three readers are needed.

And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. There are four words in this text which I feel sum up the message of Easter.

There are others who have also expressed this idea. The four words are imperatives. They are commands. By way of background, Jesus was dead! He had been betrayed by Judas, forsaken by His disciples, denied by peter, tried by the Sanhedran, condemned to die Pontius Pilate, crucified at Calvary, buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimithea.

On Easter morning women came to the tomb, concerned that they would be able to get in. Mark But when they arrived they were in for the surprise of their lives! A great earthquake had taken place. Matthew The angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and rolled back the stone. Matthew When the women arrived they were told not to fear. The angel knew they were seeking Jesus. The angels told the women to "COME". This was an invitation often given in the Scriptures.

He gave the promise of the Messiah who would have victory over Satan. Genesis He used the ark build by Noah as a picture of coming to Him for the protection of salvation. He invited the children of Israel to come out of Egypt. Later He invited them to come into the promised land. He gives great invitations to come in Isaiah and Revelation Jesus made that same great invitation in Matthew Have you labored under a load of guilt?

Have you been burdened with the awfulness of your sin? Have you labored to get into Heaven, and are still not sure you're going to make it? Have you been "heavy laden" with the load of trying to keep the Ten Commandments, or the precepts of a particular church? We come to Him who has left the tomb! We come to Him that is risen from the dead! We come to Him who is living right now in Heaven! We come to Him who is offering forgiveness and salvation to all who believe!

John We come to Him who offers peace and power to all who have believed on Him! John , John I'd like to differentiate between the words "look" and "see". When I look at something, I may not grasp what I'm looking at.

I may not comprehend or understand. But when I truly "see" something I grasp, comprehend, or understand it. I believe that's what the angel wanted the women to "see" or grasp, understand, and comprehend that the tomb was empty and that Christ had risen from the dead.

I believe God wants us to "see" that Christ is risen from the dead and is alive forever. In seeing that God wants us to place our faith and trust in Him as our Savior.

The women were told to go. Jesus did not intend for anyone to stare continually into the empty tomb. After we come to a point of seeing the empty tomb and trusting Christ as Savior, we are to go. We are to go to learn more about Him. We are to go to Him in prayer.

We are to go with Jesus Christ, allowing Him to live through us. Galatians We are to church and fellowship with other believers. Hebrews We are to go to a lost and dying world. Acts The women were supposed to tell the disciples of the resurrection. As someone has said, Christianity is one beggar telling another where to find bread. There was once a demon-possessed man who was healed.

He wanted to travel with Jesus. Instead he was told to go home and tell the great things the Lord had done for him. It is our job to tell others what great things the Lord has done for us. Psalm, Matthew , Mark , 1 Peter Easter and Christmas are perhaps the two greatest holidays for Christians. Matthew 28 shows why Easter is so great. He had risen from the dead. The disciples needed to hear the great news.

Mary Magdalene - Vss. Disciples on the road to Emmaus - Vss. The Eleven - Vs. Mark mentions Mary Magdalene and the two disciples who traveled on the road to Emmaus Luke as those to whom Jesus appeared after resurrecting from the dead. The disciples did not initially believe the reports of Jesus' resurrection. Jesus appeared to the disciples and rebuked them for their unbelief.

After belief comes the responsibility of sharing the Good News with others. Easter is a great holiday. Mark shows us some of the greatness of Easter. The women come to the tomb to anoint his body. The tomb is empty! Mary Magdalene Vss. Disciples on Road to Emmaus Vss. The Eleven Vs. The Ascension. The preaching of the Gospel. The angels made it clear that Jesus had risen from the dead. Both the Twelve and the disciples on the road to Emmaus expressed their doubts about the resurrection.

Jesus revealed himself first to the those on the Road to Emmaus, then to Peter, and then to The Twelve. They were to take the Gospel to the world. Jesus wanted to know why the two on the road to Emmaus were sad. He cared about His followers. He still does. The two had thought that Jesus was the one who would redeem Israel. Now He was dead. They did not understand true redemption that Jesus secured on the cross.

They were also confused about the reports of an open sepulchre and the appearance of angels. Jesus explained the events of his suffering and resurrection according to the Old Testament Scriptures. Jesus made it clear that He had indeed risen from the dead. When there is sorrow, Jesus is there to listen. Hebrews , Revelation He can take what confuses us and explain it.

He uses His Word. When we are confused we must not only pray for guidance but read the Bible. If we want to be joyful, we must realize that we serve a risen Lord! When Jesus rose from the dead He ministered to hurting people. He appeared to Mary Magdalene who was hurting because of the loss of her Master. He appeared to Peter who was hurting because he had denied his Lord three times. He appeared to 10 of the disciples who were hurting because they ran when Jesus was arrested.

He appeared to Thomas who was hurting because of his unbelief. He appeared to as many as disciples at one time. Many of these would have been hurting for some reason. As we see our text, Jesus also appeared to two of His followers on the Road to Emmaus. They were also hurting. It says in Luke , "Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. Even today, when we are hurting, we find that Jesus draws near.

Jesus drew near to these disciples during confusing times. Just that week they probably had been involved with Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Then there was the betrayal, arrest, trial, conviction and crucifixion of their Lord. Added to this were the events of Verses These men were certainly confused! It is during our times of confusion that Jesus will draw near to help us.

When we hurt because of sickness, death, marital or family problems, financial difficulties or employment or school problems, Jesus will draw near to help us. Matthew , Romans , Hebrews He wanted to know why the disciples were sad. He was desirous to help. Even today, Jesus is present, always ready to listen and always concerned. Hebrews , 1 Peter ,. Notice that Jesus listened to their concerns and then corrected them!

He taught them about Himself so that they would better understand the events that had just taken place. As we pray and study our Bibles during times of trouble, Jesus will correct us as well, and put us on the right path. These disciples were comforted by Jesus' appearance. Actually as Jesus taught the Scriptures to them their hearts "burned".

This was a good heartburn. Notice how quickly they shared their comfort with others. Jesus will comfort us. As we get into the Word of God and prayer, we will see Him clearly and be comforted.

Good possibility for a Sunday School lesson. Jesus showed them His body and ate food. SONG — — The disciples rejoiced. John etc. His work on the cross is finished! He hangs there no longer! He's risen from the dead! He has ascended into Heaven. He's either knocking so you'll open the door for salvation John , Ephesians , or so that you'll open the door for fellowship with Him as a Christian.

Mary found an empty tomb. She thought someone had stolen the body. Peter and John examined the evidence. John believed. Jesus expressed his presence to Mary.

Mary was so excited that she clung to Him. I used this as an Easter Sunrise message. However, this may be used at any time of the year. Christians are to be a joyful people Nehemiah , Philippians The problem with having joy is that we live in a real world.

There are times when we feel much like Mary Magdalene in John Her Lord and Master had been terribly mistreated and murdered. Now, she has come to the tomb to anoint the body of Jesus, and the body is missing.

She did not realize that Jesus had risen, so out of sorrow and frustration, she stood outside the tomb weeping according to verse I am not deceived. Not everyone who comes church is ecstatic with joy. In fact, some of you probably feel like weeping. And even though some of you may not feel like weeping, your joy is hampered by events that have happened to you and your friends. Life is filled with sorrow. There is the sorrow caused by hurt feelings. There is the sorrow caused from being mistreated.

There is the sorrow caused by seeing others hurt and mistreated. There is the sorrow caused by family difficulties. There is the sorrow caused by sickness and death. These sorrows create a barrier that makes it difficult for us to be joyful at Easter. As Mary stood there weeping, she was asked by angels why she was weeping. However, it was probably the culmination of sorrows over the previous days that also added to the weeping.

May I ask you a question, one to be answered silently? Why are you weeping this morning? You may not be literally weeping, but what is making you sad on this joyous holiday?

John - Jesus appears to Mary, although Mary at first does not realize it. However, I believe that he is also telling Mary that there is no longer a need to weep. My friend, Jesus cares about what is causing you sorrow and He wants you to tell him when you have sorrows.

He cares enough to listen. It is interesting that Jesus turned her weeping into joy with just one word. He spoke her name. John - Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. Jesus basically communicated to Mary that she should not weep because Jesus, her master, was very much alive. The Lord Jesus turned her sorrow into joy. And this morning, the Lord Jesus wants your sorrow to be turned to joy.

It does not mean that your problems will go away. But it does mean that we can rejoice in spite of our circumstances. The announcements that the angles gave the women who came to the tomb, was that Jesus has risen. The message Jesus gave the two disciples on the way to Emmaus was that He has risen!

The message to the apostles and to Thomas was that He has risen! And Jesus appearing to Mary was declaring that He had risen!
