Hill, MD, the Ryan Hill Research Foundation is dedicated to basic science as well as endoscopic and surgical research of a broad spectrum of esophageal disorders. The fellowship provides the opportunity to actively engage in research on digestive disease, both clinically and in the laboratory; to be funded to present at national meetings; and to participate in patient care during procedures and outpatient follow-up.

Data on many of these patients is maintained in multiple ongoing prospective databases for the study of Barrett's esophagus, esophagectomy, esophagectomy quality of life and cost data, and paraesophageal hernia. In addition to Dr. Low, fellowship faculty consists of multiple providers on the Digestive Disease Institute care team who are a part of the Esophageal Center of Excellence and have extensive expertise in the treatment and research of digestive disease.

How To Apply Physicians who have completed a formal surgical residency in the United States as approved by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education before the application deadline are eligible. Burn Fellowship Indiana University Date Posted: January 4, Indiana University offers two positions as a twelve month fellowship July through June focusing on all clinical aspects of acute and reconstructive burn care in both the adult and pediatric population. The Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center at Eskenazi Hospital houses a fifteen bed inpatient burn unit, all beds with ICU capabilities, in addition to private burn operating rooms, procedure rooms, multi-disciplinary ancillary services, and the outpatient clinic.

There are admissions and outpatient burns seen annually. The burn team is led by the plastic surgery division with assistance from the surgical and pulmonary critical care teams in managing burn resuscitations, inhalation injuries, burn physiology derangements, wound care, and surgical debridements and wound closure in our acute burn patients.

The Speedway Burn Unit at Riley Hospital for Children houses a 10 bed burn unit, which is within walking distance from the adult hospital.

There are dedicated advanced practice providers to assist with daily patient care, outpatient evaluations, and coordinating burn reconstructions. The burn team, with assistance from the PICU services, manages all medical aspects of acute burn care along with the surgical debridements, wound closures, and reconstructive procedures.

The fellows have the opportunity to not only participate in acute burn management, but also outside hospital acceptance, pre-hospital management, post-burn reconstruction, traumatic road rash injuries, and desquamating dermatologic conditions.

Providers are utilizing advanced wound coverage techniques including spray skin cells, cultured epithelial autografts, and dermal regenerative templates in addition to traditional autografting. The reconstructive opportunities are robust as all patients are followed long term by the plastic surgery providers offering laser treatments, scar revisions, fat grafting, contracture releases, and tissue expansion if indicated.

On call responsibilities are rotating in a home call format, assisted by other residents and advanced practice providers. The fellows are expected to participate in clinical research with the support of the burn unit resources, focused around some aspect of burn care, and submit work to one of the regional or the annual national burn meeting for presentation. There are weekly conferences on Monday mornings as case indications discussions and Wednesday mornings as didactics focused around a topic in reconstructive and plastic surgery.

Additionally, the burn team joins in the trauma morbidity and mortality conference at Eskenazi quarterly. At the end of the completion of the burn fellowship, the fellows will be expected to be competent in taking care of burn patients from admission to discharge as well as their long term reconstructive needs.

The program has 4 dedicated faculty and a research lab. The fellow is expected to have a wide exposure to foregut, reconstructive abdominal wall and bariatric surgery procedures. The fellow is expected to log approximately to cases by the end of the fellowship. There are department-wide and service-specific conferences that enhance both clinical and research activities. There is a weekly departmental Grand Rounds. Fellows have access to all conferences within the University.

Research interests will be discussed with the fellow prior to the beginning of the fellowship with the hope that the fellow will be prepared to begin their research project soon after they start the program.

It is expected that the fellow will complete at least one research project and submit it for publication during the program. Intuitive has graciously agreed to sponsor one of the fellowship positions for the year and Intuitive grants are pending for both of the fellowships positions from The Florida Surgical Specialists Enhanced Gastrointestinal Surgery Fellowship is based upon a very busy clinical practice of General Surgery, especially foregut, hernia and colorectal surgery with intensive clinical research.

There will be strong focus on minimally invasive and robotic surgery. Riva Das, co-program director is a colorectal specialist focused on minimally invasive robotic, laparoscopic and endoluminal approaches to common colorectal diseases. We will offer two positions each year, beginning for one fellow July 1st and the second fellow August 1st of the academic year, for graduates of accredited General Surgery training programs in the United States.

The program includes clinical, academic, and research components. The clinical activity of the fellowship is undertaken at all training facilities served by Florida Surgical Specialists. Clinical activities include inpatient and outpatient care. The outpatient clinical experience includes patients seen in a state of the art outpatient facility. Outpatient clinics are on Monday and Friday. About patients are seen per week in the clinic. The fellows aid attending faculty in the clinic, along with medical students and physician assistant students.

The operating schedule is very busy; the two attendings run approximately eight full operating rooms per week. There are no surgical residents competing for attention from the faculty. Research The research activities are undertaken almost daily throughout the year. The clinical research work involves collecting and analyzing data primarily from different databases including LESS cholecystectomies, gastroesophageal reflux disease, melanoma, robotic inguinal hernias and LESS surgery outcomes and techniques.

In addition, the fellow is involved in educating advanced LESS surgery techniques to both pre-medical students and practicing visiting surgeons in the operating room.

Research Expectations and Responsibilities Participate in ongoing research activities. Identify research projects of interest. Send abstracts to regional, national and international meetings. Complete preparation for presentations at regional, national and international meetings. Complete manuscripts covering research projects chosen by the Fellow. Initiate and maintain a registry for all procedures done in the fellowship, including outcomes.

Participate in accrual, evaluation, and data management of various clinical protocols sponsored by the supervising surgeons. Education and Teaching Educational activities are a focus of the fellow. At this conference, we discuss all upcoming operations for the week and interesting patients we care for; the Fellow is actively involved in this conference.

The Fellow is also engaged in the teaching of undergraduate students, particularly in the summer, in conjunction with a summer student education and research program. The Fellow will also attend and present at Surgical Grand Rounds, and cancer conference. Conferences with the attendings on clinical care and research occur daily. The fellow should expect close contact with and mentoring by the faculty with daily exposure.

The fellow will receive constructive criticism regarding his or her performance and a progress report on the chosen research project will be discussed. To obtain the certificate of completion, an unanimous decision on the part of the faculty will be required; this decision will be based on the written evaluations submitted by the faculty each quarter.

Innumerable opportunities for feedback will exist for fellow and faculty on a day-to-day basis. Full encouragement for feedback is given.
