However when I go into safemode, it shuts down correctly. When I restart, it will shutdown correctly and restart as per normal.
I have gone to the microsoft page and followed their instructions on shutdown and testing, but still no correct shutdown.
I have installed all the patches required - wont shut down. Made a shortcut using rundll. I have checked my device manager and there are no conflicts and no duplicate entries. This is a new installation of Windows 98SE which was installed by an outside company. I did notice that they have fiddled with the logo and it has theiradvertising on it.

These problems can be a booger. Good Skill Mike. When I shut down there are only three in the task bar. Systray, mapis32 and explorer.
I took out mapis32 but it still wouldnt shut down. Have you checked the event log? Last case senario, you may want to install a "System Utility" to check your machine for invalid. You can do a C-A-D control-alt-del to see what is running before you shut down, close one at a time and see if it shuts down correctly. Time consuming but effective. I have not encountered this problem with Win 98, however, I did experience it with Win The solution was to uninstall, then reinstall Internet Explorer. I have no idea if it will help in Win 98, but maybe it's worth a shot.
